Reception Flowers

When the time comes to plan the décor for your reception, more than likely major attention will be given to the table centerpieces. Although you don't have to incorporate a lush floral arrangement on every table, more often than not, flowers are somehow incorporated into the overall centerpiece design. Whether floating with candles, a single dramatic stem in a vase, or a tall arrangement reaching new highs, flowers are a perfect visual and aromatic element for your celebration.

Getting Started
After deciding to use flowers as part of your reception, start asking your friends and family if they know of floral designers that come with high recommendations. Although terms like "florist" are the most common, don't be surprised if you are referred to "event designers" and "floral designers". These terms are popping up throughout the wedding community since florists are finding themselves doing much more than bouquets and centerpieces - many literally design events, from offering rentals to orchestrating the lighting for the entire reception venue.

Ask to view the floral designer's portfolio. Concentrate on the work they have done not what they say they "can" do. Pay attention to the way they present their photographs. Chances are, the way they present their work is a direct reflection of how they feel about themselves. This is an aesthetic field, so don't settle for anything less than beautiful and follow your gut instincts.

Once you choose your florist, trust them to do a great job. Don't obsess about the overall design. Remember, your florist is dealing with perishable items; sometimes a new design element may have to be added at the last minute or a different variety of flower may be used to enhance the look of the centerpiece; whatever the case, leave the flowers to the experts.

Developing A Vision
Once you choose your florist, make sure they assist you in developing your wedding vision. It is possible that they have done weddings and receptions in your event facility and may know what works and doesn't work in that particular venue.

Focus on the space of your reception venue. Is the room large with high ceilings and able to accommodate hundreds of guests? Or is it small and cozy with accommodations limited to 50 or less? The size and height of your floral centerpieces will determine whether they will be swallowed up by the room or perfect complement to the space. Lighting and season are also key elements. Will your wedding be held outside or inside, daytime or evening, on a snowy winter night or a summer day filled with warmth and sunlight? All these factors will determine the type of flowers to use and the amount perfect for each table.

Get Creative!
Floral centerpieces should be a reflection of the couple, just as the entire wedding is. Creatively presenting your centerpieces can be a great treat for the guests and a fun aspect for you and your florist to design. Arrangements can include many vibrant colors and types of flowers or a monotone design with a single variety. Incorporating other elements such as sugared fruits, herbs, and ornaments can make for a spectacular centerpiece. Vases can come in all shapes and sizes, or you may choose to show off your centerpiece in other containers. Bell jars, trays, buckets, pots, boxes, candelabras, ribbons, bowls, and anything or everything that screams "YOU"!

Plants are always a fun way to add a creative twist. From cactuses for a Mexican fiesta, to topiaries for a sophisticated and fresh garden wedding, plants can set tables perfectly.

If your reception calls for a strict budget, renting silk centerpieces may be a less expensive alternative, but you may be limited in designs and colors. Staggering your flowers at every other table may cut your final price in half. Speak with your florist about all the money saving options available to you.

Finally, be realistic about your budget. If you cringe at the thought of paying five to ten percent or more for your reception centerpieces, you may be happier with creatively-displayed candles, fruits, or rose petals sprinkled around a few single roses gracefully floating in small votive holders. A creative floral centerpiece not only fits your aesthetic vision, but your budget as well.
